In Your Loss You Need A Friend
It’s mid October with Fall season in high gear. The holidays are creeping up too fast, yet so many people have experienced loss this past year or so. Loss of loved ones who have died such as, friends, coworkers, arrives, a spouse, partner, sibling, and loss due to senseless tragedy, war, a disease, cancer, old age, or even a drug overdose, or suicide. You may experienced a loss of belongings or house due to a hurricane, a fire, or a flood, etc.
Grief and grieving (sadness) is a real life emotion and can takes it’s toll on our lives. Perhaps you are still living in denial thinking this really hasn’t happened! Let me emphasize that its okay to be angry;especially when the unexpected happens so suddenly with no preparation or planning ahead of time.
Grieving is part of life yet sometimes we can live under a cloud of guilt like we had some control of the situation. Or ‘it’s my fault’ and we begin to re-live the ‘what ifs’ over and over in our minds. We get depressed or live in a long phase of depression for months and even years reasoning what could have been or should have because we’re to blame.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed”. Psalm 34:18
Accepting loss can be difficult but is attainable in our losses. Drinking away our sorrows or living on prescription pills will not make the pain or guilt go away. Being angry at God or doubting Him is not the answer either. God knows what you are going through in your difficult season even when its not easy to cope. He understands your needs and emotions and for some reason allows us to go through very difficult times in life.
“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand”. Isaiah 41:10
God’s love does not change and He loves you just the same. His merits with us are not based on works, but His unconditional love and grace. Grace is unmerited favor. I’ve learned that when we experience loss that the Lord wants us to reach out in compassion to help others in their loss. I do realize there are times that no words can be said, but to be present for them is important. Talking with somebody or a group for grief helps as well.
Let me end with an old hymn title, “What A Friend We Have in Jesus”. Jesus is always there even when we don’t feel or see His presence.
” For, I am always with you, even to the end of the age”
”Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid”. John 14:27
Be strong my friend and don’t be afraid to get help. Trust the Lord to get you through you’ve got this. Its worth making the effort.
Have a strong and safe week my friend.
