You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.
Psalms 18:28 NIV
Stress can cause us to eventually become burned out. You may be juggling too many things in your life such as too much multi-tasking at work or home doing long hours or even wearing too many hats and never learning to say, “no”.
Thinking you always have to be at everything, such as church events, family gatherings, or sporting events. No your child doesn’t need to play two or three sports every season! There are times you just need to be alone and reboot.
Ministry has been a challenge with bi-vocation Pastors and leaders. To keep up with the bills and the cost of living.
All this busyness is not just causing stress, but other symptoms including depression. Your emotional and physical health are taking a toll on you, but your spritual life with the Lord is burning dim.
When our lamps begin to dim out, it does not happen overnight; but in time through many circumstances our effectiveness in serving Christ now flickers. We make so many excuses why we’re not on fire for God like we once were. In the parable of the ten virgins, five were wise and five were foolish.
“At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ “ ‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’ “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.”
Matthew 25:1-10 NIV
Perhaps it is time for you to trim your lamp and ask the Lord for His oil, the power and fire of the Holy Spirit to work and live within us.
As Jesus reminded the seven churches in the book of revelation to repent and do the first works they knew, which was living and serving Christ. Putting the Lord first in everything. This is priority in our life.
The Lord will give us the wisdom to help us be more balanced in life and not just being some religious fanatic. If your too busy, learn to say no!
“Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path” Paslm 119:105
Meditating on God’s Word will help us to focus on the Lord and equip us for the day.
Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”
Joshua 1:8 NIV
Remember life is fragile and handle with prayer because we are “jars of clay”. His light will not dim and His light will always drive out darkness.
For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.
2 Corinthians 4:6-7
