What keeps us from making wise decisions?
We continue to live in a culture that screams at us for instant gratification, or we get tempted to become impulsive. There are ‘no magic formulas’!
Too often when a major crisis hits us we get tempted or tested to do something stupid or irrational.
For example, the last auto payment is paid and we think we need a new car. Impulse buying on credit cards at high interest is not wise because you’ve been convinced that you owe it to yourself!
Somebody is going through or has been divorced and they jump into a relationship they have no business being in because the other partner is cheating or has left a heap of a mess.
A loved one dies after years of marriage or friendship and they want to sell everything and move right away or quickly get involved in another relationship.
Drowning out your sorrows in alcohol, drugs, or even compulsive gambling is not the solution when a crisis hits. Face your fears and take responsibility.
I know I’m generalizing here, but the point is we should not let our guard down when it is needed the most while in transition. Our own foolishness and pride easily gets in the way.
“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. Those who listen to instruction will prosper; those who trust the Lord will be joyful. The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive.”
Proverbs 16:18,20-1
A few insights I discovered in my journey.
- Be humble and be quiet. Make time alone with the Lord. Seek God’s guidance.
- Be patient. I know this can be difficult waiting, but it’s a necessity. You don’t always have to be doing something or always be on the go. Slow down and reflect. Usually you have to wait in line well over an hour at a good restaurant!
- Seek out wise and godly counsel. Get another perspective from experience, or a person of insight or support group.
“In the multitude of counsel (advisers) there is safety.” - If you’re facing a career change due to job or profession don’t jump at the first offer. Allow God to guide you and give you peace. Pray for God’s will in your life.
“Plans fail for lack of counsel (advice), but with many advisers they succeed”.
Proverbs 15:22 NIV
- Take care of yourself because nobody else will! Your health is important physically, mentally, emotionally, and yes, your spirituality is important. Put God the Father, Jesus Christ first in everything you do you will have no regrets. Take time to pray and get involved in a solid Christian church community. We need one another and yes it saves a ton of money from paying a counselor too.
If we can be teachable and discerning our life will make a difference.
- Read and study your Bible for God to speak to you for wisdom, guidance, and strength. Listen for God to speak to you in His Word.
“Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” Psalm 119:105
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding” Proverbs 3:5
I’ve learned a few things along the way in life and I’m definitely not perfect, but all the trials, curve balls, and crises have made me a better person when I responded with wise and responsible choices. Take ownership and walk with humility.
Have a great day my friend.
